The Santa Barbara Unified School District has financially supported the funding for site-based counseling through Family Service Agency for a number of years. In addition, some elementary schools have supplemented that support with their own site funds. The counseling services provides the following:
- Identification of high-risk children
- Individual and/or group counseling
- Outreach to parents/guardians

In addition, the school-based counselors establish goals for each child seen. These goals are individualized and are based upon the child's presenting need/issue. Examples of goals might include the following:
- Decrease the number of negative behavioral incidents in the classroom
- Increase positive peer relationships
- Assist in the development of coping skills regarding parents' death/divorce
- Teach anger management skills
