Background:The renovation if two science labs at Santa Barbara Junior High School were authorized by the Board as a Measure Q funded project on May 7, 2013.  It is anticipated that Division of State Architect (DSA) approval will occur between the publishing date for the December 10, 2103 Board agenda and the Board meeting.  Provisional approval will allow for demolition over winter break if the district receives final sign-off on the drawings by DSA.

This project is over budget and the Guaranteed Maximum Sum (GMS) for this project is for the basic needs of the lab.  The project manager, the architect, the site administration and staff and the contractor have eliminated many non essential items that can be added at a later date if a funding source is identified.  This project has had an extensive review for savings and value engineering.

The total construction budget for this project is $788,498.  The portion of the GMS associated with the science lab work is $828,628.  In addition, the site experienced a water leak from a hose bib and the floor is the science area must be repaired to accomplish the project.  The dollar amount necessary for the repair is $146,006.  DSA is requiring upgrades to the accessible toilet fixture in the restrooms near the science labs and that work is $7,590.  The architect has received 2 (ADA and structural) of the 3 DSA approvals necessary for this project.  The fire/life safety component may require a modification to the fire alarm system.
