Item Title:Dos Pueblos High School New Course Approval – Service Learning
Agenda Title:Dos Pueblos High School New Course Approval – Service Learning
Background:Service Learning will give students the opportunity to serve the Dos Pueblos Engineering Academy (DPEA), Dos Pueblos High School (DPHS), and the larger community in a variety of ways: through community service projects, outreach efforts including tutoring and student support efforts at local schools, a range of social events, tec. Students will develop ideas and work in groups to bring these ideas to fruition. They will plan their projects and harness the human resources and other resources necessary to execute/implement their visions. All projects undertaken will have a service component to them.

The length of Service Learning is year long and outside of the regular school day (Monday and Wednesday evenings). This should be variable credit course (between 1-5 credits) so that a wide range of students can participate and earn credit for the Service Learning projects that they undertake. Some Business Teams inherently require a larger time commitment than others, which can overburden students. A variable credit structure will foster a greater feeling of equity and encourage students to give what they ca rather than giving too much at the expense of other commitments. A variable structure will also create a sense of equity, inclusivity, and accessibility to all volunteer and service learning opportunities. All DPEA students should be able to participate in Service Learning projects without having to commit to a 5-credit course. The credits they earn will depend completely on the Service Learning work they do.
Recommendation:That the Board of Education approve the Dos Pueblos High School new course approval for Service Learning.
