Agenda Title:CCSS Math Course Pathway Proposal and Communication Plan
Background:At the January 14, 2014 board meeting, the district presented to the board its decision to adopt the integrated math curriculum as the math curriculum of choice for Santa Barbara Unified School District. The district also presented its recommended course pathways students may experience through their math education as they matriculate through the system. The district is now making a request for the board to adopt the proposed course pathways.

At the last meeting, the board also requested that a messaging campaign be executed to explain the changes in the math curriculum to the community. As a result, a community newsletter regarding the changes in the secondary math courses and pathways beginning in 2014-15 school year will be going home to sixth grade parents in school folders, provided to principals to distribute as appropriate and posted on the District website. Other discussions are happening a s shown below:
  • Math Teachers on Special Assignment (TOSA), Professional Learning Communities (PLC) liaisons, and math teachers are discussing changes during Open Houses
  • Math TOSAs are meeting with other local (feeder) elementary districts math TOSAs and leaders to discuss the changes to the secondary math courses and pathways.
  • Math TOSAs are meeting with district community groups (e.g., PAC, DATC, etc. and site-specific parent groups (e.g., PTSA, etc.) to share information about CCSS math, Smarter balanced, and the proposed SBUSD changes in secondary math courses.
Recommendation:That the Board of Education approve the communication to the community about the Santa Barbara Unified School District Common Core State Standards math transition.
