Item Title:Discussion of Illuminate Student Information System
Agenda Title:Discussion of Illuminate Student Information System
Background: For a number of years, the SBUSD has used a student information system (SIS) called Aeries to manage student data.  Aeries is used daily by teachers, counselors, attendance clerks, registrars, principals, and others for the purposes of recording and retrieving student data.  Some of this data includes attendance, discipline, testing, and demographic information.  Aeries is also used in our secondary schools to create the master schedule.  At the district level, information is regularly pulled from Aeries and submitted to the California Longitudinal Pupil Achievement Data System (CALPADS).

Most users access Aeries via an application that is installed on their computer.  Aeries also has a limited web interface.  ITS currently manages several servers that provide Aeries services.

Edusoft is an assessment management system that is used at a number of district sites.  Edusoft is used by sites to deliver benchmark and formative assessments and gather and analyze student performance data.

Several months ago the district issued a RFP for a new SIS.  The district received proposals from seven vendors; Eagle Software, EduPoint, Focus, Illuminate, Infinite Campus, and Pearson.  After reviewing all of the proposals and checking references, Illuminate was the clear winner in terms of overall cost of ownership, ease of use, and features.  Illuminate is not only a SIS but also a data and assessment tool similar to Edusoft.  The combination of a SIS and assessment management system allows for student information to be housed in one easy to use system.

Illuminate is a hosted web based system that runs on any computer platform as well as any other device that has a web browser.  Because the system is hosted, no local servers are needed and all data is backed up in state of the art secure data centers.

Illuminate gave two demonstrations for district employees.  The first demonstration covered the SIS and the second covered the data and assessment component.  After each demonstration,  a survey was sent to all those who attended.  The results of these surveys can be found here:
