Due to ratified agreement between SBUSD and SBTA dated March 2, 2016, the traditional school year calendar for students is scheduled to begin on Monday, August 21, 2017. Having the TK/K early-release days begin on Monday, August 21 and extend to 15 days, as opposed to 13 days, establishes a more coherent start of the academic year for families, students and staff. This rationale also applies to the proposal to extend the number of early-release days after winter-recess from 13 days to 14 days for schools on traditional calendar. Instructional minutes would be recuperated by making the necessary accommodations to the bell schedule for other remaining days on the calendar.
The number of early-release days for year-round calendar would also be modified, according to the table above. However, the proposal does call for the days to begin on the second day of the student school year, Thursday, July 13, as per contract, based on the board-approved calendar (June 13, 2017). Instructional minutes would be recuperated by making the necessary accommodations to the bell schedule for other remaining days on the calendar.
