Agenda Title:Implicit Bias Report - Summary of Efforts from June 2017 to October 2018 (Matsuoka)
Background:This report summarized the two-year effort to address implicit bias among our certificated staff and leaders in SBUSD. "Implicit bias is the concept that we have biases that operate in our subconscious, or below the surface. We interact with people according to our biases and we are mostly unaware that there are underlying believes that affect how we treat other people". (from the 4/4/17 board report) We have trained 433 people over the last two years and this report will summarize the very positive experience of our staff.
Recommendation:We recommend that the district continue this training into year 3 given the positive response of our staff. We also want to continue this research project into year 3 to determine the effect of such training on teacher experiences and student outcomes. We will seek direction from the Board about bringing contracts forward at a future board meeting for the 2019-2020 school year.
Resource Person:Cary Matsuoka, Superintendent
