Item Title:Recommendation to remove Roundup Quick Pro from the Santa Barbara Unified School District Approved Pesticide List (Vizzolini)
Agenda Title:Recommendation to remove Roundup Quick Pro from the Santa Barbara Unified School District Approved Pesticide List (Vizzolini)
Background:

Pursuant to the healthy Schools Act of 2000, the district is required to notify staff and parents or guardians of the name of all approved pesticide products that could potentially be applied at school sites during the upcoming year.  It is important to clarify that district staff are not trained or authorized to apply pesticides. Rather, they are applied by a licensed pest control application contractor that is registered with the California Department of Pesticide Regulation, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

It is the goal of the district to provide a safe, clean, and healthy environment for students and staff, so the maintenance department staff routinely reviews the products on our approved list for effectiveness and safety. Our list currently includes the herbicide Roundup Quick Pro (Roundup). The main ingredient in Roundup is Glyphosate, a known carcinogen.  Although the district has not used Roundup in over four years, and the EPA has not removed it from their approved pesticide list, considering recent developments and litigation and the district’s commitment to sustainable practices, staff is recommending removal of Roundup from our approved list of pesticides.

Attached is the revised list staff is asking the Board to approve.
